Each One Teach One – Open Discussion: Keyword Research
Each One, Teach One Topical Discussion here on Thursday of last week was on branding for your business here on the ColderICE.com blog. It was a FANTASTIC discussion and we will venture into this again this week.
Each Thursday we will post a topic related to us as merchants and the the COMMUNITY…YOU GUYS will come in on the comments and post. You can post your comments on the subject, links to articles or posts to other blogs on the topic, you can post links to YouTube videos or Podcast episodes. I do not care what you post as long as it furthers the education of the community, it qualifies. But of course this will ONLY work if you participate. I want to see if the community would participate to make it great. Come on guys, lets each one, teach one!!!
Topic is… Keyword Research: What is it? How can you do it? What techniques are important?
OK, I need your input now so lets start posting to the thread topical information on Brands and Branding.

We did a podcast on Keywords with Janelle Elms – http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/audioPop.jsp?episodeId=182869&cmd=apop. Enjoy and learn!
Thanks for doing this John!
When I am working on listings, I do a variety of things to find the keywords for the items, first I think about how I would search for the item what words would I use, I then use Terapeak http://www.terapeak.com to look for keywords and sales. I also use google insights for search http://www.google.com/insights/search/# to see if certain terms are trending up or down and try to build keywords from there.
To me the key is to think like a buyer and what terms would a buyer use to find it.

I think I will sit back on this on. Although I have learned a lot from some of the people I follow, (ie you, Phaedra, Marsha, Marlene, and others) it is not nearly enough. I am not even close to being able to pass on information to others that is my own. I credit you guys with my success so far. Until that changes, it is best left to the ones who do know what they are doing.
Hi Kat, and others who might read this! This series is not just for
“original” ideas or teachings. But it really is for us to share ANY LINK to
some good information. If you know of a great story on this topic from
another blog, post it! If there was a webinar you found useful on a given
topic, post it! No matter what it is or who wrote it, we are just interested
in having people freely and openly share good educational ideas, links,
whitepapers, YouTube vids, whatever. Feel free to post to the tread so we
can share resources.
Thanks,
John

hey John,
I am admin at one of the multiply sites. This is what I do. I direct them to you. I post the links to Dave white, and Melinda and Beth. I send people to Phaedra, and Judy. On that site they come to me, but all I am doing is sending them to all the people I just mentioned. I post your links there,. I understand the need to learn, and I think this is an awesome topic. That is my contribution. Anyone who is reading this, is already in the right spot.
I don't really do much keyword research.
We targeted our efforts to getting LOCAL customers, (we do B&M & online), so geo-centric was our main concern. That's much easier than trying to cover the entire web
But whe I want to dig up some good ideas on related keywords, I just type in a search a REAL user used to get to our site. I get this from google analytics, or our own web logs. However you get your “search query” info…. works.
then I head on over to Google, and use their “show options” tab. to get to the the WONDER WHEEL. It's fabulous. A nice image mapped interlinking of ideas, real quick to understand and I come away with some good leads very quickly. It helps me think like my customer much more quickly than poring over logs, and analytics stats. Kinda “organic” I think.
If you give it a go, let me know what you think… I think the best tool out there today.
I usually try and use available tools, and then sort them out accordingly, and which keywords fits the site the most.
