First Michael Jackson and Now eBay LIVE?!?

Ok, maybe that is a bad tabloid title? Dang,  it is already 2 weeks later and the circus is just rolling along around Mike ain’t it?  I watched the Entertainment news show last night and about 22 of the 30 minutes was ALL about Mike, WTF? Don’t we have other things to talk about by now?

I do, and that is the announcement that eBay LIVE is DEAD. But wait there’s more! (luv ya Billy, RIP) eBay is now going to begin throwing barbeques I guess based on the eBay developer blog picture, LOL.

eBay DevCon 2009

According to yesterday’s announcement,  eBay announced plans for a series of smaller events "within a day’s drive for as many sellers and buyers as possible." The new program is called eBay: On Location. eBay: On Location will kick off in Orlando in February, and wrap up in San Jose in August with a 15th anniversary celebration.

Reading the announcement I do get the feeling that eBay is sort of going to throw a LARGE local event in San Jose to mark the 15th year of the platform, while still going about the country doing smaller events. The local events will be more affordable and possibly better attended than a single eBay LIVE event would.

Being smaller would possibly allow more input from ALL sized sellers, not just those in Diamond or higher tier PowerSeller status. Plus you will possibly get the ear of eBay representative whom you would only see on the stage at an eBay LIVE type of event.

So what do you guys think? Is this a good move or a bad move for the folks at eBay? I want to hear what you think about it. Please leave a comment.

I LIKE IT! I think that after coming back from the EBAY RADIO event in Las Vegas a few weeks ago MR.BIGFOOT can declare SMALLER is BETTER! One of the things I liked about the small event was the ability to connect and chat with so many people sellers, EBAY folks and vendors too!

As much as I loved all three EBAY LIVE’s that I attended, this change represents a better way to bring MORE people to an EBAY event. Travel to most major venues for a LIVE is burdensome for many financially. Sounds like lots of interested sellers will be able to visit one of these events without having to take their shoes off for homeland security.

BRAVO EBAY–Great idea! Think I will vacation in Orlando this winter (Mr.Bigfoot was dreading August in Florida anyway)

I was also at the eBay Radio event and smaller is better (insert any ‘size matters’ joke here). I think it is the first sane idea eBay has had in a very long time… I don’t think it will make a difference, but it is the best idea I’ve seen come from them in a very long time… Hopefully they’ll have cheaper drinks at the bbq’s though… $9 a pop was hard to take at the radio event… lol…

As a developer I’m not so positive on this. With eBay Live there was one event where you could meet all the sellers. Now if you attend one event you only see a small fraction of them. The smaller developers really lose out on this.

That is a GREAT take and a perspective that I could never have come up with from the seller view. Wow, you are right it does make challenges for small developers. You point out one of the possible many unintended consequences of the move to local. Thank YOU!
